According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary on-line (via
palisade
Function: noun
Etymology: French palissade, ultimately from Latin palus stake -- more at POLE
Date: 1600
1 a : a fence of stakes especially for defense b : a long strong stake pointed at the top and set close with others as a defense
2 : a line of bold cliffs

I hope that helps.

Generally, I look up the definition of words used in contexts that I don't expect; in this case, a "palisade wall."

You should be able to do a preliminary by a sheet pile analysis of the wall (laterally loaded pile). Elevated earth backfill on one side restrained by pile/pole driven into the soil. You need the soil data to determine the resistance and the minimum depth of embedment(driving length)

hey guys, Thanks for the help. The detail on what they have shown as a palisade isn't fort-like. I finally figured it out, but ended up getting fired by the client in the meantime. Sometimes it just doesn't pay (literally) to be honest. I told them I'd never designed a wall such as this, and, well, you get the picture.

There are several manufacturers of this system. I had all their (the clients) quotes from suppliers showing geogrid (but no drawing). I thought it was a Mesa wall system, however, it was not. Yesterday, after I gave him the design on the system, THEN he gives me the "suggested" detail from a drawing. It uses a metal basket with geogrid to retain the soil, so it's really more of a reinforced earth wall. Vegetation can actually grow on its face. It's dirt cheap (pun intended) compared to other retaining systems. I think I'm going to use it on another job I'm doing. Tensar Corporation's version is called SierraSlope. Check it out at

A gabion basket-type wall called a palisade wall? Confusing, to say the least. That salesman hasn't contacted me yet...

Sorry you lost the job.
