Hello all,

The AISC manual Chapter J10.6 explains about web panel zone shear. This section applies to double concentrated forces applied to one or both flanges of a member at the same location. Typically, I used to include panel zone shear check in beam to column flange moment connections where moment forms couple in the column flange which results in column web panel zone shear. Now my question is "If the post is bearing on the beam and the moment is specified for the post base connection, do we need to check the web panel zone shear strength of the beam since it forms the double concentrated forces in the beam flange? Every reference to panel zone shear check is related to columns only. I have not seen any beam provided with web doubler at the post junction. If we are to check the panel zone web shear strength of beam, how does the pr/pc can be considered for the beam? Can anyone throw some light on this?

If the post has a moment at the bottom then the check applies.

It would be very unusual for a doubler to be required in a beam, which is probably why you haven't seen one.

The beam axial load, Pr, is often zero. The value is whatever is coming out of your structural analysis.
