Parameters while opening a file

Hi,
I just want to know what are all the parameters that influence the speed of opening a file in an application from a server? Suppose i am opening a CATIA file from a server into the application,which parameters influence the opening speed of the file? if it is the network speed (LAN),or the client machine configuration or the server configuration ?

here are some parameters (no specific order):

network speed / quality / settings
size of the file
memory available on computer
space on swapping drive
links in the CATIA file to other file and availability and size of those linked files (impacted by next item)
parameter in catia to open linked document or not (impact previous item)
location of catsettings (local or remote)
activity on server
