Hypothetically, I have a vertical pressure vessel that is split in half around the circumference in the middle and is connected by two extremely large bolted flanges. There is a manway on one of the halves of the pressure vessel and it is extremely close to the bolted flange, where the limit of reinforcement extends further than the face of the flange (where the two halves of the pressure vessel meet). When I do a nozzle reinforcement calculation per UG-37 do I only take into account the area under the flange face as in my drawing? Or can I take the full limit of reinforcement because the two halves of the pressure vessel are bolted together?

Personally I want to do the more conservative thing and take less area of reinforcement. I just want to hear from other people what they think of this problem.Regards,
