Pattern error 1

I'm trying to model a tree of molded parts consisting of an 8 by 12 array of identical parts, all connected by runners. If I model one of the parts and attempt to pattern it, I get a rebuild error unless I make the parts large enough, or space them close enough, that they overlap. Is there a way around this error or is there a better way to model the part?

If you are making the pattern within a part (and without the runners), select the Body option and deselect the Merge option.
