Pavers at the corners of a concrete flat roof?

Hi All,

I am currently making some modifications to an existing concrete flat roof (2"stone, geotextile, 4" insulation, dpm, 8" concrete slab), Architect will be appointed at a later date as we are in the early-ish stage. Does anybody know why they would tie pavers together and put them in the corners? I am installing a concrete curb for a HVAC system and it overlaps with these pavers.

I see some pavers called up on the architectural drawings for access, but not any in the corners of the roof.

Wind uplift on a flat roof is typically highest at the corners. Maybe they opted for that to reduce the chances of gravel being thrown around in a high wind event?

Looks to me like someone’s attempt at fixing a mistake with their wind loadings!

It's occasionally done to resist wind uplift in the corners... and, is intentional, not an afterthought.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Thanks for the responses all. Makes sense its an uplift issue as all the pavers are tied together.
