This Delaval GTS pump is in sweet cat feed transfers service, and per our operators assessment, its operation is rough. By rough meaning a vibrating, ratling noise kind of operation. In order to attenuate the roughness, they start openning the spillback globe valve. This pump has a history of seals failures for which the seals have been upgraded with a material that is less prone to blistering. It was used for multiple products before (i.e slurry oil, LCO, cut resid, sweet & sour cat feed,etc.). However, the last seal leak episode resulted from the failure of the input shaft end bearing mounting which caused shaft fretting damage under the inner race. The suction piping is as follows: 6 inches header into a 12 inch suction piping which reduces to a 10 inch suction inlet pipe. The discharge is a 10 inch piping which reduces to an 8 inches header. The spillback line is 6 inches. We suspect that the pump is beingg starved (noise) and to stop that the spill back is openned. What would be the main cause for the rough operation? Could a spillback (Flow-Pressure) controller solve the problem? Any experience installing this type of controllers in screw pumps?
