pdf compatibility 2

By "saving as pdf" from my copy of SW2006 SP3.0 I get pdf files compatible with Acrobat Reader 7.0 but NOT compatible with Adobe Acrobat 5.0. That is my company's an a lot other companies' (I am told) standard. Is there a way to set the level of compatibility when saving as pdf?

I can print to Acrobat Distiller 5.0 but the result is of a poor quality.

I don't know of a way to set the level of compatibility for Acrobat. Check with your VAR.
Also, I have never heard of a standard for Acrobat 5.0. It's like saying everyone uses a standard for MS Word 2002.
I suggest upgrading Acrobat. There is also a new app called Acrobat 3D, very cool.

If you print the file to a PDF printer, rather than doing a "Save as" PDF, you may be able to set the version.

No ... as far as I know, you could "always" do that.

I don't know which program is creating the actual PDF. Whether it is SW or the PDF printer?

Printing to a PDF printer, the pdf file is created by the "printer", not SW. Thank you CBL, I wasn't aware of all the options available in the Acrobat "printer".

You got it right! Why spend money on upgrades when it's not necessary. We probably use just 10-25% of the Acrobat capabilities and features.

Install SolidWorks SP3.4
This fixes the acrobat version 5 problem.

Hi all,

I'm confused, was there a true solution to this? By that I mean:
I have SW2006,
I don't have acrobat (full acrobat),
My customers and travelling colleagues have acrobat (reader only) 5. Unfortunately we can't (or by company policy don't) ask our customers to upgrade, but try to make life as easy as possible for them.
I take it CorBlimeyLimey's suggestion requires full acrobat.

Hayden, I have SW2006 SP4.1. I can, now, save as PDF and open the file in Acrobat 5.0. This was not possible with SP3.0. I don't need full acrobat. See also andrewjohns' post above. What SP do you have?

We're using 4.1, I must admit I haven't tried since changing to 4.1, but just have. We're getting acrobat 5 compatable files.

Related question...

Using SW2006 SP4.1, when we "Save as PDF" we get PDFs with the fonts as we use them (Century Gothic). But, if a supplier tries to read them and doesn't have that font on his system he gets an error message of:

"A font required for font substitution is missing.

Cannot find or create the font ‘Century Gothic’. Some characters may not display or print correctly."

Anyone know of a setting that can fix this?

No setting, but what you could do is send the font along with the PDF. You can copy it from the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder. The supplier would simply have to drag & drop it into the same folder before opening the PDF.

Just a comment: A lot of computers have Acrobat Reader 5.0 and haven't been (and prolly never will be) upgraded to the latest version because IT departments just don't want to spend the time to do it, especially for computers sitting around a manufacturing floor or lab that have no single user, or any user that would be bothered to even know what Acrobat is beyond the fact that it automatically pops up when they click on a PDF file.

You should file the missing font problem to SW, as the PDF format allows for embedding fonts (see for instance the font options in PDFCreator)

You have the ability to embed fonts in SolidWorks SP4.1 when saving as a pdf. Click on the options tab when saving out the pdf.
