Hi,
We just updated to Solidworks 2008, with SW Explorer and PDM Workgroup Server 2009 SP1.0. In SWExplorer, I'm trying to update models from the vault but I get an error "Error retrieving "filename.sldprt" from the server.". I also get an error when trying to reload parts from the vault versions. Any ideas why this would be? Thanks!

tydguy,

We saw a similar error in 2009 until SP 2.0. I don't recall seeing that error in 2008 SP 1.0. Best I can recommend is to make sure your vault is at the latest version. I've also noticed that restarting to vault (Letting it validate the vault) can sometimes fix errors like this also.

I see you are running PDM Workgroup Server 2009 SP1.0. You just updated to SolidWorks 2008.
Why not update both the Vault and SolidWorks to 2009 SP3.0?

tydguy,

I'm not a PDM user but I believe SW and PDM play better together when their versions and SPs match.

I also believe that it would pay you to skip SW08 and go straight to SW09; you will find it more user friendly.

Standing,

Just an out of date signature, thanks for bringing it to my attention. We've been on SP 3.0 since its release. I'll correct that right now.

CBL,

We've actually found that if you are running anything short of SP 2.0 on SW09 that there are a lot of bugs in PDMWorkgroups. It wasn't until 2.0 that it stabilized and behaved for the SW users and not until 3.0 that it behaved for the web portal users.

CBL,
I noticed tydguy said:

I never noticed CBL signature, sorry. But I am glad I could help. Thanks.

Standing,

I didn't notice that the first time around, nice catch. The catch there is that the vault and the client machines must be of the same major release of the software or they won't work together. If you have a 2009 vault you need a 2009 client. That's the error message that should show when you try and log in to the vault. If you're not getting that error message there's something else wrong somewhere.

DekkerDesign,
You stated it very well. A star for you.
I hope tydguy is listening.

Thanks for your replies!

@CBL
Unfortunately, it isn't my choice what versions of solidworks we use in our company. I would love to be on SW09, but when asked, the IT guys said that they have to test the software and make sure it works across our systems or something like that. It probably takes them a year to implement it anyways.

I noticed that I have PDMWorks 2008 & 2009 installed on my machine. If I launch Explorer from solidworks, it launches 2008, but if I use my desktop link, it launches 2009. Maybe there is some conflict there? Also, my Windows Explorer SW context menu is gone. Any idea how to get that back.

Sorry for the slow responses. My email notification was notifying me.

Thanks!

Well, obviously the IT guys didn't do enough testing of PDMWorks 2009. Unfortunately they will now have to either upgrade SW to 2009 or downgrade PDMWorks to 2008.

It makes little to no sense why they would have upgraded one without the other.

If, in the process of upgrading the vault, they've also updated your files to the 2009 format then you're hosed. If that's the case then IT will be upgrading you sooner than you think. I'm not aware of a utility that lets you save to previous versions and maintain SW functionality. on the up side, the only way the files would be updated to the 2009 format is if somebody intentionally did it, the vault won't do it automatically.

sounds like somebody in IT didn't do their homework. That only happened with one SW upgrade, now the engineers control the SW updates, not IT.

I am expierencing the same issue. SW2009 SP 3.0 and SW2009 PDMWorks. Any other clues? I can submit items to the vault but I can not retrieve. Thanks in advance for the help.

vlong,
Try turning off the PDM Workgroups add-in. Then after SolidWorks starts, turn on PDM Workgroups add-in for that session.

vlong,

Is the server the most current SP? I've read and heard about a lot of groups running the latest client service pack with vaults still on 0.0 typically because IT runs the vault and tends to see one of your critical Add-ins as a "nonessential service that shouldn't need patching to work right".
