What are the longest wait times you guys/gals have had for PE applications? I'm already licensed in a few states, but I'm dealing with one state in particular on the east coast which I'm quickly approaching 1 year since I mailed my application. Its been nonstop lost paperwork on their part and it takes them three months just to open an envelope. It would seem to me that a state that does this has failed the public.. If anyone has any tricks on how to deal with this please share!

Call them and suck up big time. Pick up that 2000 lb phone and talk to them. Emails are too easy to ignore. Make it seem it's your fault. Blame your boss whenever possible ("My boss is up my backside to get this completed."). Ask what you can do to expedite it.
These people get in confrontations every day, so yelling or threatening is not going to get you anywhere.

yep, been there done that. Phone is the only way to contact them. As much as I've wanted to tell them off, I havent. Being nice and giving the sob story has gotten me nowhere unfortunately.

Send a letter to the head of the board of engineers for that state. Send it certified, return receipt. In it state your attempts to become legally licensed to practice engineering in their state, including a chronology of your applications and follow-up. Point out that you are licensed in other states that have reciprocity or commity with their state. Tell them that their delays have cost you money in lost revenue and time spent trying to get them to review and act on your application.

Check the rules of the board in that state (they all have them). It usually states that when an application is received, they have a certain time period in which to act on the application. They've obviously failed to meet that. Point out that they have violated their own rules and that any further delay in acting upon your application will result in a complaint filed with the state's administrator (not sure what it is called in that state, but again...they all have one). Give them 30 days then file the complaint. If you get an adverse action on your application, then it's time to be an a$$. Go as high above their heads in the state as you can and make noise.

I figured as much, however, what is the longest application wait time you've ever experienced? I dont want to go off my rocker if its not unheard of.

I've had them take anywhere from 5 days to 4 months to issue the license (Wisconsin is the state that issued it in just [italic]5 days[/italic]). A year is unheard of. Which state is this?

Probably the same state board that I had to call 8 times to get my EIT certification when I got out of school. Lost paperwork, passing the buck, it was a total mess.

I applied on line for reciprocity from Maryland and was licensed in like 10 minutes - assuming my credit card passed. AMAZING!!

Washington DC was ALL paperwork and about three months.

Pick up the phone and find an advocate that will help you out!!

I am currently licensed in three states (IL, PA and WV) and had no issues for two of the three because IL was my original jurisdiction. I have an NCEES record which helped to avoid waiting on others for information. I think the longest I had to wait was 1 month.
