PED NDT (RT) Qualifications

Hi All,

Just another quick question regarding PED regulations.

If I have a valve that would fall into PED category 3 service, I am apparently supposed to have all NDT personal be PED certified by a Notified body. Now let's say I want an external company to perform radio-graphic examination on all welds of this valve. If that company does not have personal who are qualified by PED, are there other ways to circumvent this restriction? Or will my own notified body not accept these RT results and not give me PED approval on the valve?

I've been beating my head against the wall with similar questions about PED and NORSOK and have concluded that the sub-contract facility has to have people who are at least "equivalent" to EN473 trained personnel. Take a look at the program BINDT has set up. The qualification does not extend beyond PED work, so if another directive were to somehow be involved you will start your search for properly trained personnel all over.

Thank you for the reply. "Equivalent to EN473 trained personnel" sounds very vague. I know the sub-contractor I am using is certified according to only ASME standards. How would one determine what is equivalent to EN473?

After looking into it further, that BINDT program seems to be the only answer. It looks like if I have BINDT audit the NDE facility, I can have them have NDT personnel approved at my sub-contracting facility for RT.

Did you ask your notified body for a list of approved vendors in your area. Most of the time the NB can provide such information. Who are you using? I might be able to provide a link from their website with information.

I was able to get a list of available vendors. My problem is this sub-contractor has been much faster than others. Thank you for the offer though.

Just out of curiosity, is there any way to make the BINDT audit retro active? For example, if I had some recent work done at a non-PED approved RT facility, and I were to use the BINDT audit, would this past work qualify as acceptable according to PED?
