Hi folks, new to these forums and thought I'd give you guys a shot. I'm looking for a data sheet that will tell me the magnetic properties of gray cast iron, I've been searching the web for a reliable reference but have come up empty-handed. Does anyone know the permeability range of cast iron offhand? I believe it is one of the poorer conductors (as compared with other alloys), but have been unable to confirm. Additionally, I was curious as to what Bmax is for the same material. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers has some data.

It says gray cast iron has very poor magnetic properties, inferior mechanical properties and virtually no ductility.

It has a permeability curve that shows permeability in the range of 300 to 100 G/Oe. Malleable cast iron maxes out about about 2100 G/Oe, as a point of comparison.

If no luck here, try the Materials Engineering - Magnetic Engineering forum.

Thanks, dpc - that's pretty much what I figured. Sigh...

Some grades of Meehanite cast irons are quite good magnetically. Contact them.

I sucessfully designed some Voice Coil Magnet Housing [Near Net Shape] a decade ago using Meehanite.

An alternative today would be Powder Metalergy [near net shape with powdered Iron(?)].
