IS there a simple test that can be done to distinguish between brass and phos bronze? i have a part that may be phos bronze, but would like to know for sure.

It could be done with eddy current electrical conductivity measuring equipment. It could be done by density, if you have a jolly balance (used for rubber and plastic density determination). It could be done via SEM/EDS. But, I'm guessing that you don't have access to any of the above. You might try color comparison. Polish a small area of the part and compare to a known piece of brass and phosphor bronze, also polished. The brass will be more yellowish, the bronze more redish.

Thanks swall,

i dont even know what those pieces of equipment are haha.

I have comparied colour as you say. Fairly confident it is a phos bronze part. Not critical to know for sure.
Wah hoping for a simple drop certain acid on part and see change, but you never know untill you ask.
Thankyou.
