Hello, how can I theoretically calculate how much I can remove if the inlet phosphorus value is 8 mg/L in a plant with a full mixed activated sludge system?

secondary treatment will only remove 1-2 mg/L P if there is no specific treatment to remove phosphorus. There is no calculation, just an estimate.

What should I do to remove phosphorus?
We have chemical and biological treatment units, but we do not make chemical dosage, we only use it as a pre-sedimentation tank. Which parameters should I monitor and how should I use the system?

The least equipment cost method to remove phosphorus is to add alum before the final clarifiers.

However, alum is expensive and the dosage increases as the phosphorus effluent decreases. Phosphorus precipitation is not a linear reaction with the alum dose. Phosphorus removal with alum is not cost effective at larger WWTP's.

Phosphorus can also be removed biologically. An anaerobic tank with a detention time of 0.5 – 1 hr where RAS and influent are mixed prior to the activated sludge process.
