Pipe & Mechanical contract

Hello I have been asked select companies to bid fore the mechanical and piping contract of a big nuclear project. This is a bit higher than my current level as I only know a bit about installation etc

From a company what prerequisites would there have to be and how best to select the companies. Also has anyone heard of using 2 contractors to mitigate the risks as it has been suggested and I think its pretty stupid as you simply double everything at the workforce management level.

Anyway any ideas about selection of companies would be greatly appreciated as I am not used to this type of work.

The list of qualified companies with good, recent experience and that will be politically acceptable, will be very short indeed. Those reasons alone may be more than enough to complete your list. Start with political acceptability.

Thanks yeah narrowed it down to 5 only. What to look for specifically though? Do i need to go down to the companee proceedures etc?

I hope not, unless you suspect that there is something wrong with them.
You should concentrate on organization, licenses, availability of qualified personnel, logistic and construction management capability and most of all financial capability.

You may want to look for information regarding tenders for similar type projects in your local area, from there you will probably get a feel for who is capable of carrying out the project as most of these will have been pre-qualified by owner/operators but it does seem like you are in a bit over your head no disrespect intended. During the tender process you will have to have the expertise within your team to evaluate technical and commercial considerations.

Thanks I for got to add that the design is mainly amsme B31.3

Apart form having SQEP compliance (suitably qualified and experienced personnel) do they need anything else to work install an ASME designed system?
Like coded welders? Anything like that?

amsme B31.3 for a Nuclear Plant - are you sure on this? Perhaps for the utilities but not for the power piping surely. Also it is ASME B31.3. The Company needs to have undertaken this type of work previously. Where in the World is the facility going to be?
