Pipe Bedding Classes 5

Hi All,

Please can someone shed some light on the UK descriptions of S1 to S5 and B1 and B2 Bedding Classes for pipes? Crawling through the web I gather that "S" is a complete surround and "B" is a cradle (180 degrees). What do the suffix numbers 1 to 5 (for S) and 1 to 2 (for B) refer to though?

Thanks RobyengIT but these only explain the prefix S and B. Need some guidance on what the numeric suffix refers to, specifically the physical difference between a B1 and B2 bedding. Any idea?

These are for Semi-rigid and flexible pipes.. Not for RIGID PIPES ..

You should look to BS EN 1295-1:1997 ( Structural design of buried pipelines under various conditions of loading at national annex
Table NA.8 Semi-rigid and flexible pipe embedments ) rather than searching the web for free of charge information..

I looked to National Annex Table NA.8 Semi-rigid and the respond to your querries ;
Class S1: Gravel (single size)
Class S2: Gravel (graded)
Class S3: Sand and coarse grained soil with than 12 % fines
Class S4: Coarse grained soil with more than 12 % fines OR Fine grained soil,....
Class S5: Fine grained soil,liquid limit less than 50 %,medium to no plasticity and less than 25 % coarse grained material
Class B1: Upper surround as for S3 or S4 Lower surround as for S1 or S2
Class B2: Upper surround as for S5 Lower surround as for S1 or S2

But you forgot to ask Embedment class D.

Thanks HTURKAK, I saw that the 1997 version of the code you are referring to has been withdrawn and replaced with a 2020 version.

Our Library purchased the 2020 edition yesterday but it doesn't have any reference to the bedding classes...

BS EN 1295-1:1997 is the code number and the information I referred BS EN 1295-1:1997 Incorporating corrigenda .March 2010.

Look to the National Annex Table NA.8 Semi-rigid and flexible pipe embedments and the info provided informative rather than NORMATIVE.

The 1997 version you mentioned is not available for purchase as it has been withdrawn.

The BSI website also doesn't seem to have the UK NA for the 2019 version.

This is very confusing but I will use the information you provided as Informative. Thank you.
