If I have a pipe drawn up and have a side view of it in a drawing, is there a way to snap to the middle of the diameter of the pipe on one of the ends?

Insert a centreline & dimension to it.

I knew you can draw a centerline .........but we are trying to convince a few holdouts here at work who use AutoCad.........And AC has snap center function, even from the side view...........Was wondering if SW's has a similar feature

I don't know what the side view is; is the side view the "circle" or a view of it's length? Pick Center Mark for the "circle" or Centerline for the length.

Dimensioning to an unmarked point along a line is ... well, pointless. [smile]

But to answer your question, no. Your ACAD users will have to realise that the "line" they see isn't really a line. It is a representation of a curved edge.

Side view meaning the length..............Dont want to draw centerlines..........I know drawing a centerline only takes a second, but we are trying to convince our piping team to switch from Autocad to SW's.......AutoCad will allow you snap to the center of the circle while looking at the length view

SW2006, you can right-click "select midpoint" while dimensioning.

Turn on "Quick Snaps" in 2006, you can snap geometry, but not dims.
You don't say which version you have and what you are trying to snap.
From my experience, die-hard ACAD users are hard to convince about anything outside the ACAD world.

Centrelines can be placed automatically when a view is created.

SW Dimensions do not snap to a curve/line mid-point.

Unfortunately AutoCAD users are usually the worst people to switch to 3D. I don't envy you your task.

TJMcD ... well whaddya know. I had not noticed that before. I stand corrected (again). Chances are I will never use that option, as I consider it bad practice, but it's good to know it is there. Thank you.

"SW2006, you can right-click "select midpoint" while dimensioning."
I don't think you can do this on a drawing file (I can't anyway). I can "select midpoint" on part sketches though.

g60dude, what you are trying to do isn't good practice. You don't have to draw a centerline, instead use the centerline tool button.

To answer your question go to View > Temporary Axis, and dimension to the temp axis.

[sigh] This just isn't my day.[/sigh]

smcadman ... you can do that in a drawing file, but only on "straight" edge lines. I opened a drawing with a square tube, not a round pipe, so the "select midpoint" worked. It does not work on silhouette edges or the ends of a round pipe in a drawing view though.

I had some extruded circles on a drawing I was trying it on, so that's why I couldn't do it (silhouette edge). Still, g60dude can't dimension to midpoints either because he is dimensioning pipe.

thanks for the input.............But like a few of you said.............its a tough conversion to switch A-Cad users to SW

Use a bigger stick and keep up the daily beatings until morale improves. [lol]

The daily beatings don't help either. Tried that. You have to take away their Solitaire.[thumbsup2]

Select midpoint does work in drawings. It was a nice enhancement added to SW2006; we use it to dimension the centerpoint locations of sheet metal slots.

Corblimeylimey, you may have just learned something new, but so did I. I didn't know Select Midpoint wouldn't work in this pipe instance; I'd only used it for those sheet metal slots.
