chitel...

Big Inch is correct.....

Pipe size is based on process flow demands, and/or to minimize pressure drop in a long system. ASME B31.1 and B31.3 only provide rules for pipe materials, wall thickness, valve selection, pipe supports etc..etc

The ASME B31.1/B31.3 codes assure system structural integrity.

Rules for pipe sizing are commonly developed on a project-by-project basis.

For most liquids, a velocity of 6-10 ft/second is suitable.... but pump suctions should be sized for 2-5 ft/second. There are exceptions..

More information can be found in "The Piping Handbook" by Nayyar and in the Crane, "Flow of Fluids" Manual #410.

Is this your first time sizing piping ?
