Hey folks. I am looking for a good reference, handbook, or anything on the design of steam tracing/electrical tracing/hot oil tracing systems (and associated insulation)for piping. Our company has all kinds of charts saying "use two steam tracers and 2 inches of insulation", but they do not seem to have any basis for these charts. I feel a little queasy using a chart that might have been developed in Houston for a design in Northern Canada. It's been many years since I've done thermodynamics, so any help is appreciated.

Thermon is located on I-35, between San Antonio and Austin, Texas. I wouldn't worry about their capability of resolving a heat tracing problem for a Canadian site. Most of the heat tracing solutions for the North Slope were developed right here in Houston.

I've used their thermal cement on steam tracing tubing and it has worked like a charm - on piping as well as on process vessels. They'll furnish you design software and some excellent manuals that clearly outline the practical way of installing the systems as well as designing them.
