Pipeline Surge Accumulator

We have a problem with pressure surges in our pipline. We are looking at ways to minimise these surges. We want to investigate the use of pressure accumulators that in an overpressure situation could take in the excess pipeline fliud an so reduce the shock on the line. When the pressure returns to normal the fluid will be pushed back into the line. I have come across surge arrestors but the one I have seen handle low prssures and flows. The pipline is a 12" 600# flowing at 440m^3/hr. The contents are petroleum. We ahve not carried out surge analysis yet as the software is extremely expensive. The line is in excess of 600km. We would like to install these devices in remote areas - so they need to be sealed units - perhaps even buried. The principle is based on hydraulic fluid accumulators - but the scale may be much larger. Has anyone had any experience with this or could point us in the right direction? Thanx.

The theory of surge arrestors (pulsation bottles) is addressed in the old Kellogg Piping Design book if you can find a copy in the "out-of-print" market.

Many consultancies will cary out this kind of calculations. They are not free either but they will provide software and persons who know how to run its.

I dount that pulsation bottles will be of any use on a large scal pipeline. You will propably need surge valves and vessels.
