For you guys that design process piperacks and pipe supports.

Do you combine a thermal friction force with wind load? I'm not talking about a thermal anchor just the friction force generated from expansion or contraction of piping prior to pipe slip on a support.

I don't know if it has changed in TX or if if was due to my situation. I worked with an engineering firm in another state designing terminal facilities in TX. Every communication had to have the PE license information and all drawings needed to be stamped.

If your pipe is large enough, it will send significant forces to the pipe T-support. However, Deflection isn't a bad thing, just make sure your anchors and overturning can withstand the lateral pipe friction force. Our piping engineers will send us a detailed document on how much force to add to the pipe support, and we add them as a live load. Keep in mind that there is no wind load reductions on the PIP. I think it is important to run ASCE 7 wind loads on large structures, to obtain a wind load reduction.
