Plain pedestal wall

Hi all,

I have a strip footing (with a pedestal wall) to take a point load from timber column. The load is around 8 kips (factored). Just wondering if it is necessary to add 4 vertical rebar at the column location. I thought is not, but maybe I am wrong.

You can check this quite simply as plain. Section 12 of EC 2 covers this - although im not sure what code you’re using.

I’ve done plain concrete rising walls under 6 storey concrete walls so I doubt you’ll need rebar for that.

I would use some rebar, regardless of what the code says. It just makes common sense. And not only at the column location but all along the wall's length.

1) Rebar is being used anyway, so adding a few rebar is not a big deal.

2) Without rebar, the wall just "sits" on the footing. In the future, excavate next to the wall... wall slides off the footing due to soil pressure on the other side taking the post with it... structure collapses.

Low probability of this happening, but high risk if it does.

Like Slide says, at least connect the wall to the footing.
 
Sorry - I should have clarified...In my case I had centrally placed bars as starters for the twinwall above, but that’s “plain” as far as EC2 is concerned.. So I’d at least put that in.

If however you can get proper bars in then you may well sleep more comfortably.

I vote no unless there's an uplift load to consider etc. 8K is nothing for the wall and can be handled using plain concrete design methods as M_IRE mentioned. And it's not as though you're going to get a meaningful column cage with ties into an 8" wall anyhow. As others have mentioned, and you've probably already considered, you should have distributed vertical reinforcing throughout your wall to connect it to your footing. Coordinating the location of the mini, in-wall column will be a hassle and, in my opinion, there's not enough gain here to justify it.
