Does anyone know what the allowable shear stress is in plate steel. I'm hanging a load from an eye-hole cut in 4" square plate steel. I was wondering if it was 0.40Fy, or if that only applies to beams in bending.

The sheer is determined by the amount of material that is left from the edge of the hole to edge of the material. A lot of this information is a simple look-up, or you can do like I have several times and that is send a email to your steel supplier. I downloaded several analisis software from steel suppliers that give you the information.

Thanks Leslie, but I need to know what the allowable stress is in the steel. For Example...a beam in bending with proper lateral bracing has the allowable bending stress, Fb=0.66Fy. A beam with the proper web to thickness ratio has the allowable shear stress, Fv=0.40Fy. I need to know what the allowable shear stress is in plate steel. I've been using 0.40Fy, but I think that I'm being conservative.
