Hello,

I have a scenario where one plate is parallel to flat face of the bolt and the tapped plate is perpendicular to the flat face of the bolt. Can anyone tell me the rule of thumb for plate thickness for tapped holes? Material is 6061 Aluminum alloy. Bolt is flat head countersink. picture is attached so you understand me.

IMHO, an engineer should know when something is critical and needs a careful analysis and when something isn't critical and so can safely be addressed with a much briefer analysis (or rules of thumb, 'cause loads are impractical)

CWB1,

The DAR's concern about my system was that the screws would tear out the side of the plate. I actually tried to model this in FEA, and I could see issues. I had lots of threads engaged. The DAR refused to assume that bolts and screws would be tightened down properly at the time the airplane crashed.

Hi
The OP can correct me if I am wrong but my understanding is that it’s not thread engagement that he is worried about but the amount of material surrounding the threaded hole or in simpler terms the hole centre distance to the edge of the plate, that’s how I read his sketch.
There maybe concerns regarding thread shear and thread length engagement but I don’t think that’s the question here.

rb1957, agreed thats why i asked the question and didnt do a bolt joint analysis.

desertfox, yes that was my concern.
