Why would a gravity based substructure of a processing platform be steel constructed instead of concrete constructed?

1. Because the number of concrete construction yards is limited
2. Design and construction codes for steel structures have a lot more history and familiarity
3. It's probably cheaper to dump tonnes of iron ore into a 'big bucket' rather than build the weight in concrete.

Build the shell with steel and fill the interior with granit?

I've assumed that if it was to be gravity based, then concrete would make sense because of corrosion issues. Does iron ore solve the corrosion issues?

I am referring to the steel constructed gravity substructure for the Wheatstone development.

The standard offshore WA is to build a steel jacket and then build steel compartment walls amongst the members. Install jacket and compartments and then fill them with iron ore. I know; I know, but that's Western Australia for you! You're not going to change them with those fancy ideas. She'll be right mate!

For the reason you've listed in your earlier message (1) - (3)? Steve, can't quite picture it. Any key words to search the web?

Thanks.

Obviously way too much iron there.

Western Austrlia has a lack of facilities to build big CGS but a few small CGS have been built.
