Hi,
We use Cegelec plc's (Gem 80) on a metal processing line. The system uses the Gemsmart remote I/O system, which is basically a re-badged American product(Transition Technology). This system is now due to be replaced, but the question is with what.Does anyone have experience of some current systems available?I am particularly intersted in:
System reliability
Ease of configuration
Recovery from system failures
Manufacturers technical backup
Thanks,
Phil.

Whats the protocol?

Have you looked at allen bradleys flex IO range. It is available in many protocols, is reliable, and is great to wire to as it has a multi tiered terminal block.

The GEM80 PLC is still supported by Alstom Power Conversion in Kidsgrove UK. You may wish to contact their technical support people, who we've found to be really helpful. If you still wish to move to another platform, they will doubtless tell you about their Alspa range of products.

Take a gander at
Lot's of I/O, PC-based, pretty easy to set up and get talking to even the most pesky fieldbus. I prefer the Ethernet versions to all as long as real-time is not needed. Even then it is doable if done right.
