Please help..faces of part won't stay colored when added to assembly. 1

Ok how do I word this...I made a part. It has different colors on different faces. When I add it to the assembly, there are additional faces colored that I did not pick. When I go back to the part, it's normal again. Why? It's extremely frustrating. I'm using Solidworks 2011.

Go to your Display Manager and choose to list the appearances by hierarchy. If you see any assembly appearances there just delete them. It could also be due to the scene that you have as part of your assembly template. In that instance the colors may be right, but they look different.

I tried that. I have no assembly appearances. When in the Hierarchy sort order, all of the faces that I have and want colored are accounted for. It's a model of an industrial air compressor in which the doors and some upper panels of the unit are yellow and the lower panels and roof are grey. While I'm in editing the part, all is well, but when I switch to the assembly, the lower panels are now yellow. They were never selected in the first place. When I right-click and try to remove the appearance from the now-yellow part, it won't go away. Could this be a glitch?

I think the key may be that you need to select either component level or document level correctly when you are assigning the colors from the original part in the first place. If you assign it component level, I believe the correct colors will migrate to the assembly. Choosing document level leaves them open to re-assignment in the assembly.

Also, be sure you don't have a sneaky little display state hanging around that you don't need. Sometimes it helps to delete the extras.

I can't get it to work. I've checked everything. I go to the part, assign colors to various faces and it seems like it's carrying over to the entire component in assembly rather than just the selected faces. It's more aesthetic than anything. Ultimately, it will end up on a black and white print. I become a frustrated perfectionist at times and unless someone is here to physically show me what I'm doing wrong and why it's doing what it's doing, I'm just going to have to let it go. My boss isn't paying me to paint. Thanks for your help guys.
