What is this, what is it used for?

The boys dug it up when plowing electric cable. It was not located so seems to be private. (A note was left for the homeowner, but no response yet). No signs of security cameras and it wasn't running between two buildings, just seeminly out in the middle of no where. There are no markings on the jacket other than footage markers. The jacket & insulation are quite thick. The shielding is heavier than it looks.

you can't fix stupid

It's solid, not stranded nor twisted, so it's probably power, not signal.
So what's out in the middle of nowhere and runs without a ground?
- electric fence charger?
- a livestock tank heater?
- light pole?

I'm new at this but I bet, it's a parallel fiber optic converter. I can't tell from the picture but it looks like the fibers need spliced definitely, something digital. It's protested so more than likely it goes somewhere that is hazardous to the wire.

Looks like Rodent proof Shielded Multi-conductor (NEC FPLR and CEC CMG FT4) suitable for buried telephone line and limited power carrying conductors. [bigsmile]

Did you ever identify this cable?

Judging from the jacket and shielding, and the two conductors, I would think it was either 1) old direct bury phone cable, or 2) direct bury low voltage lighting power wire.

Rodents love PVC in the winter time.

This phone line cable is Rodent proof, low resistance/km , good shielding and low dielectric factor.

The line resistance and spectral attenuation for voice & data gain must be equalized for long haul with standard negative impedance amplifiers.. Low resistance wiring improves distance possible from CO and maintain stability in amplifiers with adequate SNR
