Plug valve actuator

Can a large plug valve (42 inch) buried 3ft below grade be controlled using an above grade Pneumatic actuator?

I would suggest that a hydraulic or electric operator may be a better solution. However if you only have air then a pneumatic to hydraulic device is available to provide a small actuator.

well . . . too many unknowns to give you an answer . . .

valve torque requirements, normal, max, min, breakaway, all valve dimensional data, and rotation data - get from valve mfg.

forward all valve data, i.e. torque requirements, energy sources available, limit switches, instrumentation requirements, etc. and dimensional data for mounting actuator, to a supplier of actuators and then you can get your answer.

as stanier alludes to, actuator size & cost is dependent upon actuator type selected.

the answer is yes. however, you may not like the cost.

in general, the higher the power gas pressure then the lower the cost of the actuator. that is why stanier suggested a hydraulic type actuator.

there are companies who make a skid mounted, mini central hydraulic system to go with the hydraulic actuator.

you will also have to have a high head extension to get the actuator above grade.

After reading all the comments I realize that electric or hydraulic type actuators are also possible. I will contact Rotorak to obtain more details

You could use a combination such as gas power over hydraulic as well. It might limit some of the bumping effect you can sometimes get with pneumatics alone.
