Hey Guys,

What is the standard diameter of plug weld and spacing between welds, and how can you calculate its strength? CISC or AISC

Thanks in advance!!

For metal deck - usually 1/2” diameter. Capacity depends on gage of the deck.

What are you welding?

Mike, you're thinking of a spot or puddle weld - not the same thing as a plug weld.

Veer007, check out CSA W59-18 clause 4.4.2.1 - diameter of the plug shall be the thickness of the plate + 8mm. There is a maximum diameter as well, but the standard would be the minimum size. For strength calculations - there is no allowable tension in a plug weld, just shear.

Isn't that "plug" meant to fill the void space, then grind smooth. Otherwise, it will be a spot, or tack weld.

As CanPro notes, a plug weld is only for shear. Thickness of the material times the circumference of the circle is the shear area with no benefit of reinforcement.
