Is anybody familiar with a method of calculating the probable maximum flood? It's a dam site in New York State, Putnam County. I was able to locate a "rule of thumb" procedure used in the past (30-40 years ago) in the ACOE Phase 1 dam evaluations but I'm not sure if it's still valid. I will appreciate any help.

The COE is going to be one of your best resources. The only problem I found with their PMF process is that their guidelines are for basins larger that 10 sq miles.


I always like to look at a couple of different methods and hope they have similiar results. In your hydro model, you can plug in your PMP rainfall to come up with the PMF. PMP rainfall amounts are available from the NOAA website.

Suggest you contact your state dam safety department and ask for their help. If it is a regulated dam, they will be the ones to issue your permit and approve your method.
