Hi,

I have a light weight 3 storey timber frame building sitting on RC podium Slab. One end of the podium can be tied into an existing building which is braced. The opposite end is a free end which is not braced. My query is stability related.

Should I design the column and beam arrangement at podium level as portals in both directions?

Any tips appreciated.

Thanks.

J.

Without any shear walls or other bracing elements, I think portal action is what you have to do.

If the lateral system of the existing building can resist the additional lateral forces imposed by the addition, no need to design as a portal frame in that direction.
