To Haydenwse- we used epoxy coated strand extensively to replace corroding strands in a garage slab back in about 1990 to 1995, doing one or two floors per year. We found that they too corroded and failed due to corrosion. The most likely reason was because the epoxy coating got scratched down to the bare metal strand at locations, as it was being drawn into the existing sheath. I would not use it for this purpose again. Fortunately the garage was eventually demolished to make way for a new development.
Interesting. Although precast garages in this area (southern Ontario) usually do reasonably well, I have seen one precast garage that had to be demolished about 3 years ago due to corrosion. It had corrosion of the tendons in the stems of some of the double tees, due to leakage of the joints between the flanges of adjacent precast double tee units, and the leakage water ran along the tee top slab soffit and down the stem. Also corrosion of the rebar in the cast-in-place ledges supporting the double tees, again due to lrakage at the joint. To be fair, this was one of the first precast garages to be built in this area. Modern precast garages do better, if the precaster really know what he is doing, although leakage of joints is still, in my opinion, the weakest part of a precast garage. The joints should be regularly inspected. I suppose the sealant in the joints should all be replaced when it is reaching the end of its reliable life.
I know of one precast garage that did exceptionally well over about 20 years, at which time it was demolished due to redevelopment of the site.
