Pre-drilled Plate

Hello All,

I am asked to design pre-drilled plate that will allow the bolting on of future arrangements. But unfortunately dimensions between holes(both in horizontal & vertical)can vary. I am thinking to have some rows of horizontal slots but it will let me play in horizontal distance. In this case I can face with problem in verticals where vertical distance between bolts of arrangement might not coincide with distance among slot rows or vise versa. Can you guys give me some good ideas how to design the best?

What will the plate be holding? What is its orientation? Is this a critical structural component? Will it be slip critical? Is it subject to vibration? How large is the plate? How many holes? How large are the loads? Eccentricity?

it depends on how close/far the patterns are to one another, like Ron says.

i'd start by over laying the different patterns and seeing what comes to mind.

if you can make the patterns far apart, then they won't interact ... have a pattern for each installation.

maybe you can reuse one hole, and arrange the others far enough apart.

maybe the holes are close together ? maybe then use a large hole that encloses both locations and use an eccentric bush.

maybe drill off the plate to suit the specific installation ??

Plate is not critical component and structural integrity will be checked by me once something suitible will be conceived. It will carry aquipment that possess 6 holes in two rows. But again properties of pattern will vary. No vibrations as it is only for subsea use and will be mounted on subsea basket. Size - 800 x 400 x 25. Getting into details, plate will be welded on side of basket thereby arrangement will be bolted on plate in vertical plane.

sorry, but not much more detail provided ...

how do the hole patterns compare ? ... "two rows" ... can you inter-pitch rows ??

do you need a single baseplate (with lots of holes), or could you fabricate a plate, bolting together a couple plates, and so separate one row of holes from another ?

I think there is some misunderstanding here... Lets assume that we do have an equipment that in its terms, it has 4 bolts on corners like corners of "rectangular". But width and length of this "rectangular" is variable. Now to merge this rectangular shaped equipment with my basket I am planning to weld a plate on side of basket but plate should have adequate hole design to coincide equipment's holes on itself. My own idea to have slots on plates but as underlined above it has some shortcomings.

If it is not cleared let me know.

"is variable" ... is it discrete or infinitely variable ? how much does it vary ? 1D? 10D?

why not put a separate set of holes for each possible "rectangle" ? how many "different equipments" are you mounting ?
