Hi,

For pre eng buildings are the expansion joints ignored in design?

I have a 500' long building* 50' wide and the response I got was, in pre eng buildings there won't be expansion joint is this true ?

Thank you!

I wouldn't say ignored. Or, at the least, I hope not. Instead, I would expect that thermal expansion would be planned for in such a way as to, in many cases, obviate the need for expansion joints. One strategy might be to only put cross bracing near the middle of the long dimension of the building such that everything draws inwards towards that. Even at that, however, 500' is a pretty long building.

Hi KootK,

Thank you for the concept!

How does providing the braced frame in the middle of the 500' and not at both ends helps to eleminate the need for expansion joint, could you please explain me understand that concept. I really appreciate

Thank you

In this video around 3:22 there is a brief explanation for what KootK is talking about.

Thanks for taking this one across the finish line. You've spared me some time consuming skecthwork.

I did a 750 foot long PEMB. I forced them to have an expansion joint. In my case, the geometry of the building resulted in two expansion joints.
