Pre-packaged, Nonshrink Grout Testing (Field) 1

We are supporting a project demanding strict quality. The client is proposing to use Non-shrink grout under base-plates and other structural components. We can not find an ASTM Standard that specifically addresses "Field" testing of the grout.

We have referenced the following ASTMs:
C 109
C 942 (manufacturer's recommendation)
C 1107

These touch and go on the subject of field sampling/testing, but very vague. We are in the process of writing a project/task-task specific procedure to encapsulate all requirements, and would appreciate helpful input.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

I am not certain that you can properly test such a product. The non-shrink property is not easily tested even under laboratory conditions. If the issue is strength, then C1019 might be appropriate. You might be better off doing real-time field QA on the wet mortar to be sure it is mixed in accordance with manufacturers requirements, so that you do not find out too late that the mix was wrong. You should be able to rely on the bag mix itself being correct, or you should pick a better mix/brand and pre-qualify it. But you might evaluate whether the consequences are dire if the grout comes out slightly off spec - don't spend a large sum of time or money testing properties which are inconsequential.

The procedure is a test for laboratory prepared samples and not field sampling and testing.

Proper inspection of the use on-site is the most effective method to insure quality.

I agree with concretemasonry, good on-site oversight will ensure quality. However, many engineers want to see a number, we typically collect non-shrink grout samples in 2x2x2 cubes and test according to C109.
