Popular window/door manufacturer does not recommend their exterior electrostic powder painted aluminum clading and brick mold casing be painted over with other finishing materials as doing so will void a 10-year warranty. Because of this, the manufacturer declines to provide guidelines to prepare the clading/casing for the aplication of acrylic primer/finish paint to match existing trim color on adjacent windows and doors.
In cases where the clading/casing is out of warranty, or when warranty coverage is of secondary importance to continuity in trim color, can the powder painted surfaces be simply preped by either cleaning with trisodium phosphate &/or deglossing with fine grit sandpaper or steel wool, or does the powder paint need to be removed completely prior to application of acrylic primer/finish paint? What agents should be used if complete removal is necessary? Are there any agents to be avoided if complete removal is not necessary and only deglossing is required?
