Hi!

Short question...does anyone know whether there is a written statement inside EN 13480 (or other EN/DIN norms) norms which excludes which pipes/lines should be hydrotested.

Our subcontractor for piping erection claims that small bore pipes i.e. < DN50 don´t have to be pressure tested. Is this true?

Best regards

It might be (just guessing here, but we've seen similar arguments) that for this contractor, piping < DN50 is all PED art 4.3, or cat. SEP. And that his argument is that for SEP, Annex I, thus the hydrotest, doesn't apply. That argument is correct, but if EN 13480 is specified in the specification or engineering design, that makes the situation different as it overrules the PED. On some points, EN 13480 is more stringent than PED as it also specified requirements for SEP.

Other than that, Im not known with exclusions in EN 13480. Why dont you ask him - the answer is usually something to laugh about.

I didn't see an exclusion. I believe that if it needs to be hydrotested and it is practical to hydrotest it, you must test it. That's the part I see.

--Einstein gave the same test to students every year. When asked why he would do something like that, "Because the answers had changed."

I can't see any piping design code saying that.

Only way to prove it is ask them for the code reference, not the PED reference.

That's when you get answers like ""That's what I've ALWAYS done" and things like "show me where it says that" - errrr no you show me..."

Please let us know.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.
