Hello I need to design a pressure vessel that can withstand 4ksi of external pressure. Does anyone know of a good pressure vessel book that could help me out?

Thank you

Uh, I hope you meant 4 psi external pressure... In which case its fairly easy for someone who routinely does ASME Section VIII design work. I'd suggest finding a pressure vessel engineer who will moonlight the job in one to four hours, depending on complexity of the vessel.

I am looking at 4000psi. The vessel will have a 2in ID and be roughly 12 inches long. I am still working on the seal design. Any suggestions?

Ok, 4000 psi it is... but out of curiosity, how will this device be used - how do you plan to generate an external 4000 psi loading? 8000' deep in the ocean or something else? If it's some explosion, then you have to consider that only one side will be exposed, and you are not dealing with hydrostatic loading conditions.

In any case, Section VIII won't be of use here. But at only 2" ID, and 12" long, I wouldn't necesserely expect a buckling failure. I'd start at 1" thick and use FEA to see how it'll behave. What material are you planning on using?

This will be used for deep ocean testing. I normally would do just that, but my current employer does not want to fork out for an FEA package.
I was planning to use Ti or SS

Thanks,
Ian
