Hi wastewater folks,

Can you help an old EE who's a little stymied about the arrangement of components at the front end of a municipal-size treatment plant? I want to draw a "typical" diagram, but it seems that the plants I have seen in person are all different:

Coarse bar screen, pumps, fine screen, comminuter, grit tank

Coarse bar screen, fine screen, pumps, grit tank

Coarse bar screen, comminuter, pumps, fine screens, grit tank

I know there may not be a "typical" arrangement, but I would appreciate any ideas of what you folks might put in such a diagram.

I'm actually doing a presentation on the process controls. I'm pretty good at those, but I want to include an overview of the process. I'll be staying away from the biology part, though.

Oh, and the plant in question is activated sludge, aerobic digestion, 150 mgd.

Good on y'all,

Goober Dave

There us a diagram on wikipedia.

The arrangement on the Lenntech site is probably typical.

The location of the lift pumps depends on the terrain which is very site specific. If the terrain slopes to the treatment plant, you may not have lift pumps.

Screens, comminuters, and grit tanks are optional. You probably will not have a comminutor on a 150 mgd plant.

Thank you so much, bimr!

That's a huge help.

Double good on ya,

From what I've heard (and I'm not an expert), you want the grit chamber before the fine screen to minimize the wear on the mechanical apparatus of the fine screen.

This appears to be in general agreement with the post above.

Pumping is site specific. You need to select pumps capable of passing solids that will be in the flow.

Thank you FiltrationEngineer,

I'll bring that up. My presentation is next Wednesday, so good timing!

As for pumps passing solids, I got to see a couple of live turtles make it up to the top of the riser in Memphis (about 60 feet). That was cool.

Good on ya,

Goober Dave
