Does anyone know what the code states for an impact load design for a private parking garage. I realize that there is an entire code for public parking garages but the parking garage that I am designing is for nine private condo units. The structure is a 3 floors with one sublevel of parking. Columns from above fall between some of the parking spaces. Is it required that the column need to be designed for some requirements of column protection or since it is a private garage with only about 12 car spaces, none is required? The guidelines of large public parking garages would require overdesigning for such a small application.

As a non-expert on this, I would have thought that a car parking near a private residence would hit a column with the same force as the same car parking in a public car park. I would have thought the only difference is the number of cars parking in a given space, the impact loading should be the same.....not the definitive answer, but just seems logical to me

AISC Steel Design Guide 18 has some good info on parking structures. They recommend a concentrated horizontal load of 10,0000 pounds 18 inches above the floor for bumpers etc.
