Problem with Knowledge Enabled Standard Reuse Parts 1

Hi,

I am currently in the process of setting up some knowledge enabled standard reuse parts for use with NX/Teamcenter (Running NX 5.0.5) per the "white paper" put out by UGS.

I have done the following with no problems: Created the template part file, Created the part family spreadsheet with different part configurations, Created all of the "children" parts from that spreadsheet (all done within teamcenter).

The problem that I am running into is when I go to create the KRX file (right clicking on the template file in the member select area of the reuse parts resource bar). Once I have selected the appropriate parameters and file name, pressing the "OK" button simply closes the dialog and does not create a KRX file. It is acting like I pressed the "Close" button instead of the "OK" button.

I have done all of this within native NX and had no problems. Am I missing a setting in my customer defaults file? Any Help would be appreciated.

I just have a generic .krx file which I rename and edit.

Also if you're creating several similar 'standard parts' it's almost easier just rename and edit the last one since often only one or two edits is all you need to create a new .krx file.

Thanks for the information, but I still have the problem of not being able to get a KRX file into Teamcenter in the first place.

I have recently discovered that NX is creating the KRX file, but it's not going into Teamcenter. It is creating the KRX file in the same location as all of my syslog files - in my case its C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp folder. I realize I could probably import a file into Teamcenter directly, but I am not sure what specific dataset type I would need to put the file under. Any suggestions?

I should probably clarify: I am now running NX 5.0.6 as of last Friday and Teamcenter 2007.

They are just text files which looks a lot like XML.

I havent been in here for quite a while - been working on production oriented items instead of admin. Apparently we had some issues with our current Teamcenter setup that are being worked out as we speak. I just wanted to thank you for your help.

Have you tried to instance those parts in the ANT?
do you get the redit reuseable on the instance part?

Yes, I have tried that and no, I don't get that option (I am assuming here that you are talking about MB3 menu). At the moment, our installation Tc 2005 SR1/2007 does not allow the dataset for .krx files "out of the box." We're working on getting that fixed at the moment.

I realise it has been some time since you stated you are working on a solution for .krx files in Teamcenter, and may be busy elsewhere, but I wondered if you had any further info for us, like can Teamcenter be configured to handle the re-use library?

The other issue we face is creating then maintaining a database of parts which should ideally be done by the physical part supplier, but the model format will always be an issue. This must be a global issue for many companies who wish to use ISO/DIN/JIS/ANSI standard parts, and so a pooled resource would be a possible solution, or should we just purchase (assuming it's not free) the Siemens NX Machinery library?

If your NX licenses are for MACH Bundles, then there is no charge to download the Machinery Libraries from the Siemens PLM support website. And as far as accessing the Reuse functionality itself, your only prerequisite is that you have a basic Assemblies license.

Now there are several neutral websites out there where a large amount of 3D model data, representing purchased items, can be downloaded, often in native formats covering most all the major CAD packages out there. The one I use most often when I need something not currently covered by the NX Machinery Libraries is:

Note that this is a free site, although you do have to register.

Thanks John for the useful links, you refer to the Machinery library of parts which I assume are somewhere in the Siemens ftp download area, but I am finding them difficult to locate. Are they the library referred to in the brochure here;

Extract from this document states;
Ready-to-use standard parts libraries Above and beyond the four major components that comprise NX’s Knowledge Re-use capabilities, your NX environment can leverage the NX Machinery Library of eady-to-use standard parts. This library consists of more than 100,000 standard parts including screws, washers, nuts, bearings, pins and other design items. These parts are available in ANSI, ISO, DIN IT GB and GOST standards. Once installation in native NX mode or Teamcenter-managed mode is complete, users simply drag and drop any standard part from the Reuse Library directly into an assembly.

Are there 100,000+ parts in the download area?

Yes, they are available from the Product Download site at...

...but you will need your webkey account number and password to login. Once there, select the 'Product Download' option and if your license includes the right to download the libraries, you should see a 'box' labeled 'NX Machinery Library' (next to the one labeled 'NX Cast' and just a couple over from the actual 'NX' one). Just select it, go to the bottom and the page and expand the item that you will find there. I recommend that before you decide which library(s) to download that you review both the 'readme.doc' and the 'catalogue'.

Hi John. Do you know if the machinery library is being developed or available for teamcenter 8 or higher? I believe the download only works it TC2005/7.
