Problems with Linear Patterns 2

Hi
Iam facing some problems while patterning.Here is what happens.
Ive have a Top level assembly with mid level assembly whicjh inturn has a sub assembly.With my top level assembly as active doc,I tried to create a linear pattern of sub assembly.Even selection list components to pattern show sub assembly correctly . On okaying what happens is my mid level assembly gets patterned instead of sub assembly. Is ther any other way to pattern a component like this with my top level assembly as active doc.

Also is it possible to create a 3D pattern jus like 3D Array what we do in AutoCAD .

I haven't tried doing this, but have noticed something consistent in a similar area--sub-assemblies do not explode in exploded views, but are treated as single components. Your sub-subassembly could be considered the same thing.

To overcome this, simply reinsert your sub-subassembly and pattern off the newly inserted subassembly. This will probably work fine.

For a 3D pattern, I would think you could create a linear pattern on one plane, then repeat it by switching axes to create any pattern you like--polar or rectangular.

The 3D pattern it takes two steps to pattern(First plane & second with an axis.i wanna go for a sinlg step operation.

hi slee,
we can pattern in x,y and z directions in single step using autocad(3d array) or 3dstudio max4.
these above softwares r nonfeature based and nonparametric.
but i don't think , it is posible to do in single step in solidworks.
may be i'm wrong. upto my knowledge it is not posiible using single step to do x,y and z directions patterning.
for this i think u have to develope SolidWorks-API program to pattern 3 directions using single step.
expecting comments...

When you copy or array a sub-assy in your Mid Level Assy you must have your Mid Level Assy in Edit mode.

As for doing the 3D array in one step.....don't be so lazy.

When, or before, you select your part in the exploded view step, ensure that the "component part only" switch is selected. (bottom RH corner of dialogue box)

Thanks for the tip. An old hold-over from SW '97 like so many of the things I already do. I often miss the new features that relieve little frustrations.

I have to agree with GBL, but I will be the kinder voice (for a change, heh, heh.....). It is ONE extra step. Granted that Brand X or Brand Y may be able to do THIS operation in one go (and a number of other things too, probably) but so what? SW does a number of things they don't also. We should be careful about comparing such minute details of different products' interfaces.

Let me put it this way. For the sake of one extra step for something that only a small percentage of SW users use - some of the time, why would they dedicate precious development budget to it rather than to really new capabilities or enhancements that more people need?

P.S. Sorry mate, too much typing for little ol' me - all that upper an' lower case stuff too gets my fingers all twisted, I'm wearing out my backspace key doing corrections - had to abreviate you to GBL - no offence intended

Me...Unkind...???? Well, OK it wouldnt be the first time I have been accused of being too ouspoken, but no offence was intended, just my way of trying to bring some humour in. I think I must have upset someone else in this forum as one of the three votes for my faq559-863 on Line Scales was a 1. The others were an 8 and a 10.

As for the name abbreviation....no offence taken. As long as the right name goes on my paycheque I don't care what I'm called.

BTW it should be CBL, & you know you could always copy & paste the name to save your poor tired fingers

See what I mean? I'm all fingers and toes with typing!! can't even get my C's and G's right... I'm pretty handy with the backspace and delete keys though. and BTW: I'm pretty outspoken too sometimes - just though I'd let you have your turn in the barrel this time and be "good cop" today I definitely agree that we can be a little too serious around here sometimes - keep up the good humor!
