Hello all,

I am working on a project that involves some pretty complex 6061 aluminum extrusions. The extrusion company is trying to push me to switch to 6005 saying that its mechanical properties are identical. Although I have found information that confirms 6005 T5 has similar tensile strength numbers to 6061 T6 I have yet to find a "complete" properties sheet and no mention of 6005 T6. Details such as machinability, formability, Hardness, shearing strength and elongation, corrosion are N/A on some sheets. I will be bending machining, welding and heat treating this stuff so I would like to know the real properties of the material before I commit to it.

Anyone have experiance with this stuff?

Thanks for the help!

6005-T5 does not have "identical" mechanical properties to 6061-T6. The specified minimum properties for extrusions in ASTM B 221/B 221M are the same, but actual properties are almost always higher for 6061-T6. Matweb shows typical values, but for definitive data you either need to confer with Alcoa (or similar) or review authoritative references such as those from ASM International.
