Protecting concrete from sulphuric acid solution (4 molar - approximately 34% sulphuric acid) 2

Hi,

I am designing an industrial slab and plinths for a battery liquid processing plant. I need to protect the concrete from potential spills, such that the acid does not eat away the concrete and leave rebar exposed. Has anyone got knowledge on how to adjust the concrete mix or use an add mixture to protect the concrete? If yes, how would it impact the characteristic strength of concrete?

Would you happen to know any paper/journal on this topic that I may be able to get?

Anecdotally, I've heard of a juice processing plant having its concrete floors eaten way by pineapple juice continually leaking onto the floor over many years.

Concentrated sulfuric acid surely has to be worse than that. I would have thought stainless steel reinforcement at a minimum, not sure about how to protect the concrete.

You need a good high build polyurethane coating system... best to talk to a coating specialist. If I remember my chemistry...concentrated sulphuric acid is a desiccant, in addition to being a strong acid, which may be more problematic. Epoxy novolac ester is a much better coating... thanks, gentlemen.

SIKA/MBT & Chemco Systems will have both standard (Epoxy) & hi-chem (novolac-epoxy) coating formulations with good performance. I imagine a facility handling sulfuric acid will have the occasional areas where spills are frequent or intermittent ponding occurs. Knowing what housekeeping practices at other locations are like would be important to selecting the most durable protective coating.

There really aren't any ordinary portland cement options.

If there are circumstances where 98% sulfuric acid will be encountered, you should talk to the heavy hitters like:
