Proven methods to determine the condition of old wood plank decking

I have an older manufacturing facility with a wood plank decking roof covered with a layer of gravel and tar and metal sheathing on top. The insurance company has asked for an analysis of the decking to determine if any needs to be replaced due to moisture content or deterioration. Is there a proven method to test for such damage, without completely tearing the roof apart and taking samples?

Is the building protected by an automatic sprinkler system? If not, do you have the thickness of the "plank" and possibly its grade? Can you look for grading marks from the mill?

The building is protected by a sprinkler system. I believe their main concern was for collapse under excessive load such as snow. I can look for mill marks, but the exposed side has been painted several times and is covered by years of dust and oils from the manufacturing process. The wood is approximately 2" thick (tongue and groove). I will also post this on another forum.

If the building is sprinklered and complies with NFPA 13, then your fire protection issue is solved.

If the concern is the structure's ability to resist a snow load, obtain the services of a structural engineer.
