Hi,
I am wondering if anyone can let me know if the requirements of ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code apply to Hydraulic systems? I am looking at a bunch of Hydraulic systems and it appears from the vendor literature that none of the PSVs are built to ASME Code as required in ASME B31.3 Section 322.6.3. In addition, many of them are acting as PCVs (Pressure Control Valves) in that they are operating on a regular basis to control system pressure. PSVs should only operate in emergency, or abnormal pressure situations. Because of this, I am thinking that I will have to relabel the Non-ASME stamped PSVs as PCVs however as far as I can tell, many of the hydraulic systems will then not have a ASME stamped PSV to provide system Over Pressure Protection as required by ASME B31.3. I have heard from others that Hydraulic Systems are designed to National Fluid Power Association Standards however I have not been able to find any standard or code from those guys that clearly states what are the requirements for Hydraulic System Over Pressure Protection. Can anyone tell me if B31.3 applies to Hydraulic systems and if not, what standard defines the requirements for over pressure protection?
