I have started a debate with a couple of my colleagues. I would love to get some opinions/feedback. In our office typical details, we show that for corner columns (in particular) that have a concrete strength greater than the slab strength, puddling must be coordinated on site such that the concrete strength at the slab/column joint is equal to the column concrete strength. This is to satisfy Clause 10.12, Transmission of Loads Through Floor System, of the CSA A23.3-94. I quote clause 10.12.3: "The resistance of the column in the joint region . . . ". However, I interpret the "resistance" of the "joint region" as satisfying bearing. Others say it is axial resistance. Am I wrong?
