We have a system that can be over pressured from the pump head. What is recommended practice for installing a safety valve on the pump discharge? We are looking 40 bar and 10 l/s of water, would like to connect the SV discharger back to the suction tank.
That is a common method, especially for PD pumps. Just make sure the velocity is reasonable and that if this happens for a long time you measure temperature.

For a recip / plunger pump, vaguely recall a thumb rule that the gap between max developed dp and dp gap from max op pressure to PSV setpoint should be at least 40%, in a well attenuated discharge line (probably triplex or more heads + pulsation dampener) to avoid accidental lifting of PSV due to pressure pulsations. And use a pilot op PSV or a bellows PSV to account for high dp in the PSV discharge line back to suction vessel.
