Here is an interesting question. I was having a discussion with my welder, we were talking about pushing vs pulling a weld puddle. We were talking in reference to TIG, but I am interested in MIG as well. What is everyone's thoughts and/or experience? What difference is there in penetration, strength, and which would you prefer to see done?

Too many variables required to completely answer your question. The strength of the weld will be that of the filler metal plus dilution of the base metal (the tensile of the filler metal or electrode is the basically the strength of the weld for most commonly joined metals and applications.)

You are specifically asking about the travel angles of the gun or torch. The work angle will also influence the amount (or degree) of penetration, weld profile, efficiency of the gas shielding, etc.

Either technque can be used, much is dependant on the type of material joined, position, electrode diameter, etc.
